Amon Sethis have been called progressive metal, but oddly enough the two actually progressive tracks, “Exterminate the Earth” and “Far Beyond Death” are, where the atmosphere kind of takes a hike and loses some of its magic. But that is forgotten fast once closer “The Final Struggle” hits… A 25-minute monstrosity that takes you on one hell of a ride, from acoustic guitars over atmospheric rock, double bass with growls to pure Egyptian melodies, whispers and back again, Amon Sethis have crafted a masterpiece of glow and dynamics that perfectly closes off this album more than just in style. Tackling an ancient Egyptian lyrical outlook makes sense given the nature of what you hear on “Shadow the Light”, the doomier “Pharaoh’s Army” (feel a lot of SOLITUDE AETURNUS in this cut) all the way to the roller coaster 25 minute plus epic title closing track. Julien Tournoud has more of a classic metal voice, showing remarkable poise through all facets of the band’s ebbs and flows- always seeking out the right reference points and areas to shine without becoming a burden. Acoustic guitars, fluid bass lines, drumming that can be simplified one moment and go full force the next – AMON SETHIS do not follow a typical DREAM THEATER or FATES WARNING song pattern.

This Harmonic Consonance is the sixth studio album from German progressive metal band Lanfear. There is something of a power metal aspect to some of these songs, but by and large This Harmonic Consonance is a traditional, Dream Theater-inspired progressive metal album. Actually, Lanfear has a sound that's more in line with the Italian prog metal style than anything else - think Labyrinth and Pathosray. There's a decent heaviness and some real crunch in the rhythms that is balanced by some subtle melodies, and the technicality of the music never really seems overblown or self-indulgent. The vocals stand out in particular. Nuno Miguel de Barros Fernandes (now that is an unusual name for a German metal singer) sounds a lot like Pain of Salvation frontman Daniel Gildenlow at times, bringing a great range and real power to these already well executed songs.

Seen as a fresh new start for Luca Turilli so he can fufull his musical visions, he most certainly delivers here, delivering some of his best work to date. I've given this album a few spins already and am loving it, and now that I've had some time to let it settle in, I'd put it on the same level as the albums I mentioned above. So how would I describe this album? Well if you're at all familiar with RoF, then you already know what to expect. You've got the neoclassical melodic guitar solos and speedy riffs by Luca, as he delivers some of his best work to date. You've got the latin choirs and the big orchestral sounds, so it doesn't stray too far from the typical Rhapsody sound.

Swedish pioneers of dark music, Lake Of Tears, have been a constant magnitude on the scene since their 1994 Black Mark release of "Greater Art" and it's hard to imagine it without them. If one constant remains with Lake Of Tears it is that each subsiquent release will sound at least a little (often a lot) different from its predecessor, but will be in no way of inferior quality. "Illwill" is no different from this. It is Lake Of Tears most rich, mellow and powerful release to date and is an instant classic in their 8 album catalogue. Working farther away from 2007's "Moons And Muchrooms" somber elements, "Illwill" still holds true all that Lake Of Tears represent: progressive, modern, dark, psychedelic unique richness blended into their own spaced out world, someplace beyond Metal. Make no doubt, "Illwill" is a welcome addition to the rich Lake Of Tears catalogue.

Lynyrd Skynyrd's 1973 debut is no less than a classic rock album. A classic classic rock album. Eight songs, all of them great. Prime riff-rockers (Gimme Three Steps, I Ain't The One, Simple Man) one of the best rock ballads ever (Tuesday's Gone) and one genuine all-time classic song (Freebird). But the lesser known songs are great too. Things Goin' On, Mississippi Kid and Poison Whiskey are all fine songs. Not a weak spot on the whole album. In an era where great rock albums where everywhere, Pronounced Leh-nerd Skin-nerd stands distinguished. The follow-up, Second Helping, is just as good as this one, if not better. Personally, I have a particular fondness for Pronounced over Second Helping. Both are excellent though, and belong in any hard rock collection.

Nightqueen came into being in 2004 and are just now releasing their debut album For Queen and Metal. I went in expecting one thing, but came out getting something much more. From the artwork and the opening strains of the intro I was expecting fairly typical power metal. Though there are major tendencies toward this subgenre of metal, it is far from stereotypical. For one Keely Larreina is unlike most females singing this type of music. Many power metal bands fronted by women feature a more operatic vocal style. Larreina is more of a metal singer, which adds a refreshing punch to the songs. Her voice is more akin to that of say Lizzy Borden and Geoff Tate rather than Tarja and Simone from Nightwish and Epica respectively: strong voices, great range, and dramatic delivery all around, but Larreina has that added oomph. That in and of itself makes this CD incredible in my book, but that is only a small part of what makes Nightqueen a band to keep an eye on.

EU collection from the American Thrash Metal band formed by former Anthrax bassist Dan Lilker alongside guitarist John Connelly. Atomic Waste: Demos and Rehearsals includes an amazing collection of rarities from the band including 13 demos plus 10 instrumental rehearsals, three of which have never found the way to later releases. While the underground band has never truly broken through, commercially, Dan Lilker is not bitter: "I think we were just too honest and too intense. Slayer did it, but they were always more straighter Metal. Nuclear Assault, however, were influenced by Hardcore and so for fans of Anthrax and Testament, just a bit too hard. For these kind of people Slayer was the 'most extreme', that they could tolerate. "
