Fifteen years since the release of Dream Theater's debut album, When Dream and Day Unite the guys from DT put on a two hour show in Los Angeles (off their Train of Thought tour), and decide to surprise the audience with an extra special encore they had never done before. They played their debut in its entirety in celebration of it's anniversary. For those who didn't attend the show nor purchase a copy of the show, this what you missed.

Artist : Dream Theater
Country : USA
Release : Uncovered 2003-2005
Year : 2005
Genre : Heavy Metal
File Type : mp3 320

Info:

If you're familiar with Dream Theater's history (and I assume you are if you're checking out their Official Bootlegs here), you know they make some absolutely phenomenal cover songs. From the songs on Change of Seasons to the Black Clouds & Silver Linings (3 CD Special Edition) bonus disc to the series of releases where the band took on a classic album, Dream Theater always does a great job covering an interesting array of songs and artists. With Uncovered 2003-2005, we get ten more cover songs recorded live during various stops on Dream Theater's world tours. Here's the breakdown:

1. Death on Two Legs (Queen) - This was an interesting choice, but as much as a love James Labrie's vocals he just doesn't fit on this one.
2. Heart of the Sunrise (Yes) - This is such a landmark progressive rock song, and the band absolutely nails it. This is worth the price of the album by itself.
3. Heaven and Hell (Black Sabbath) - Another knockout cover, and one of my favorite songs too. Awesome.
4. Paradox (Kansas) - I'd have preferred one of the more epic songs from Masque, but it's cool to hear Dream Theater take on Kansas again.
5. Mother, Father (Journey) - As much as I love Journey, this one was hard on the ears. It is just not the right song for James's voice.
6. Machine Messiah (Yes) - Wow, going for a song from Drama is an unusual choice, but a good heavy song that's perfect for Jordan Rudess to shine.
7. Since I've Been Loving You (Led Zeppelin) - A nice, slow, bluesy jam that Labrie totally owns. I didn't know he had it in him!
8. Diary of a Madman (Ozzy Osbourne) - Just a really solid performance all-around. They gave it a spooky, almost symphonic treatment.
9. Cemetery Gates (Pantera) - This Gigantour performance features guest appearances from Burton C. Bell (Fear Factory), Dave Mustaine (Megadeth) and Russell Allen (Symphony X).
10. Won't Get Fooled Again (The Who) - Taken from Dream Theater's co-headlining tour with Queensryche, this one features Queensryche and DT together and is a great way to close out the album.

Artist : Dream Theater
Country : USA
Release : Train Of Thought
Year : 2003
Genre : Heavy Metal
File Type : mp3 320

Info:

2-disc edition. Clocking in at 7 tracks in just under 70 minutes, Train of Thought is a leaner offering than the band's previous release, the mammoth Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence. It's also heavier, more focused, more song-oriented, and more powerful overall than Six Degrees, which at times came across as a just a showcase for the band's considerable technical prowess. Train of Thought still has plenty of excellent instrumental passages (like the brilliant instrumental track "Stream of Consciousness"), and is still very much a progressive album; it's just that the instrumentals seem to merge better with the vocals to make each song more dynamic and effective. Each band member is clearly in top form on this release, and it's obvious that they all have continued to grow their talents over time. The band also seems to focus on the more metallic aspects of progressive metal with this album, which may be their heaviest release ever. Dream Theater had been performing covers of albums like Master of Puppets (Metallica) and The Number of the Beast (Iron Maiden) on some of their recent live shows, and you can hear that classic metal influence quite clearly in Train of Thought.

Artist : Dream Theater
Country : USA
Release : Through Her Eyes
Year : 2000
Genre : Heavy Metal
File Type : mp3 320

Info:

Only a band as prolific as Dream Theater can release a CD "single" with over forty minutes of material, all of it good, on the disc. This disc is a good representation of the band - it has one of their slower, softer songs on it, along with impressive live versions of their more typically progressive songs. The power of the band resides in their ability to diversify every song, whether lyrically or musically. A msut have for die-hards, and highly recommended for casual fans as well.

Artist : Dream Theater
Country : USA
Release : The ATCO Demos
Year : 2002
Genre : Heavy Metal
File Type : mp3 320

Info:

These three songs were recorded as a demo deal struck with the then Atco Label. The basic tracks were recorded by producer David Prater, in a single session at Beartracks Studios, Suffern, New York, in May 1991. Guitars, Keyboards and overdubs were recorded at Prater’s 16-track basement home studio in New Jersey. The demo’s were then submitted to the label, and on the strength of these three tracks, a recording deal was immediately struck. Here, for the very first time, the original demo is officially re-issued, in 2002, as a strictly limited edition – which is only available through the Dream Theater International Fan Clubs – to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Images and Words album.

Artist : Dream Theater
Country : USA
Release : Taste The Memories
Year : 2002
Genre : Heavy Metal
File Type : mp3 320

Info:

For the annual gift of 2002, there was a logical theme. 2002 was the tenth year anniversary for the release of Images And Words. So it was decided to pay tribute to this album, the best selling album (to date) for Dream Theater.
The fan clubs decided to get some live tracks from the Images and Words tours. The songs chosen were (for the most part) songs not released on the official live releases from that period.

Artist : Dream Theater
Country : USA
Release : Systematic Chaos [Special Edition]
Year : 2007
Genre : Heavy Metal
File Type : mp3 320

Info:

2007 album from the Progressive Rock masters, their ninth studio album overall, Rooted in the virtuosic sounds the band is known for, the album features heavy riffs reminiscent of Metallica's earlier years, soaring melodies and intricate arrangements. With Systematic Chaos, Dream Theater have sought to not only appease their ever loyal fans with their remarkable musicality, but to also reach out to all Rock fans with hook-laden tunes like 'Constant Motion', 'Forsaken' and 'The Dark Eternal Night'. Co-produced by Mike Portnoy (drummer, vocals) and John Petrucci (guitarist) and mixed by Paul Northfield (Rush, Hole, Ozzy Osbourne), Systematic Chaos is an apt title for an album that ranges from parts ever so delicate to arrangements that beg the question, how do they do that? Dream Theater have delivered a seminal album that clearly shows the band is at the top of their game twenty years into their storied career.

Artist : Dream Theater
Country : USA
Release : Stream Of Consciousness
Year : 2003
Genre : Heavy Metal
File Type : mp3 320

Info:

This is not a Dream Theater album! This CD contains the top 7 finalists in Dream Theater’s Stream of Consciousness Songwriting Contest held in the fall of 2003. The band was so pleasantly surprised with the response, effort and quality of the work from all of the artists that they wanted to share some of their talents with Dream Theater fans from around the world.
The contest was to write a song based on the charts DT used in studio for the song Stream of Consciousness. Dream Theater recieved 54 compositions from world wide, and the seven picked for this CD were the best of the best.

Artist : Dream Theater
Country : USA
Release : Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence
Year : 2002
Genre : Heavy Metal
File Type : mp3 320

Info:

Never a band to do things by halves, Dream Theater here delivers a two-disc extravaganza with a title track that clocks in at a prog-tastic 42 minutes. Very much in the style of its 1999 studio predecessor, Scenes from a Memory, the "Six Degrees" piece, which occupies the entire second disc, is divided into eight movements beginning, of course, with the overture. It's meaty stuff, though musically it alternately noodles and thrashes about in a somewhat haphazard manner while singer-lyricist James LaBrie's struggles to make an impression over the stunning instrumental onslaught. The first disc serves up five pieces averaging about 10 minutes each that hearken back to the grungier sound of 1994's Awake. The result is an album that fulfills fans' expectations. These guys have found a formula and they're sticking to it.

Artist : Dream Theater
Country : USA
Release : Score: 20th Anniversary World Tour

Info:

Artist :       Dream Theater
Country :     USA
Release :     Scenes From A World Tour
Year :           2000
Genre :       Heavy Metal
File Type :   mp3 320

Info:

This was the fifth and final XMAS CD released by the fan club. Due to complaints from members, and the stress and pressure of getting a CD completed in time for XMAS, the choice was to stop trying to make it a XMAS CD. From here on there would be an annual gift to the fan clubs instead.
First attempt to find a suitable XMAS CD was to make a CD similar to Once in a LIVEtime outtakes – release the rest of the show on CD that was not to appear on the DVD. However, since the record company had decided to release the full Live Scenes from New York on CD, this proved to be an impossible option. Next, Mike Portnoy offered to do a “Making of Scenes From A Memory” CD, but the reception for the Making of Falling Into Infinity fresh in mind, the fan clubs declined.

Artist : Dream Theater
Country : USA
Release : Progressive Nation
Year : 2008
Genre : Heavy Metal
File Type : mp3 320

Info:

This would be the final fan club CD released. The fan club was always “Mike Portnoy’s baby”, and when he left, the fan clubs basically were left on their own for the most part. Most of the fan clubs closed down shortly thereafter, so the ones left had no choice but to seize the fan club CD.
This album contains selections from the Terminal, New York shows on May 21st and 22nd 2008. Of note is the only live rendition of Repentance to date – not even sung by James LaBrie, but sung by Mikael Åkerfeldt who was second bill on the Progressive Nation tour.

Artist : Dream Theater
Country : USA
Release : Octavarium
Year : 2005
Genre : Heavy Metal
File Type : mp3 320

Info:

Octavarium opens with a lean and enthusiastic-sounding Dream Theater, one that continues to move forward without compromising its classic sound or its classic progressive metal appeal. Bassist John Myung propels album opener "The Root Of All Evil" with a weight equal to that of Mike Portnoy's forceful but finessed drumming and guitarist John Petrucci's masterful riffing which seems once more to widen the realm of possibilities available on the instrument. Keyboardist Jordan Rudess lends subtle and deft touches throughout helping further solidify the outfit's equally strong footing in the worlds of heavy and progressive rock. But the best evidence that Dream Theater remains alive and well rests perhaps in the final 34 minutes of the album. The 10-minute 9/11 meditation "Sacrificed Sons" finds vocalist James LaBrie giving one of his most convincing performances to date. The closing, 24-minute title track serves as the sound of a progressive rock orchestra delivering one more classic epic symphony, one more that lengthens this unit's ever-long prime. Both tracks stand as testament to the quintet's virtuosity, integrity and ingenuity and will fast become favorites. Further evidence of the group's diversity also exists here in the form of the unapologetically commercial (and U2-inflected) "I Walk Beside You," a song that seems destined to connect with a crossover audience--at least one up for an unforgettable adventure.
