Kansas is amazing. Ehart, Williams, Walsh, Greer and Ragsdale joined forces with a 50-piece symphony for an unforgettable performance. Let's get down to business! Steve Walsh has shocked me and delivered an absolutely knock-out performance. He hits every single note and his voice sounds fresh and vibrant. This was the best I've heard him since 1990. He especially shines on "Ghosts, "Nobody's Home," "The Other Side," and "Dust..". Ehart's drumming is so powerful and it's such a pleasure to watch his technique. Greer was fantastic on bass and even more so on the backing vocals. When he harmonizes with Walsh a great blend is created. Rich Williams was really on his game, especially on "The Wall" and "Carry On". But the guy who was the most impressive and fun to watch was Ragsdale. This guy has such flair and showmanship. As good as Robby Steinhardt was, Ragsdale is a flashier and more exciting player. If this wasn't enough we get guest appearances from Kerry Livgren and Steve Morse. The latter plays such a fiery lead on "Musicatto" it's hard to believe he's human. Livgren was exceptional as well and it was cool to see him playing a pipe organ during "The Wall". Of course there are 50 other stars of the show - the symphony. Their performance added such beauty to all the epic songs and meshed so well with the band. It was truly a match made in heaven. "Nobody's Home" was especially moving. The conductor was fun to watch too. Quite simply, this DVD captures Kansas on one of their very best nights. It should also be noted that the camera work and lighting are spectacular. Without question this DVD not only blows Live At The Whiskey and Device-Voice-Drum away, it obliterates them. The setlist is comprised from 10 different albums, so there's something here for Kansas fans of any era. No fan should be without this gem. Highly recommended.

Definitely not in the traditional vein of the "classic Kansas sound". In the Spirit of Things was made in the late '80s, a time where '70s classic rock music simply wasn't happening... Notwithstanding, Kansas managed to come up with one of its best, yet more under-appreciated gems. Steve Walsh's soulful and pasionate singing combined with Steve Morse's guitar wizardry really made ITSOT a marvelous opus.

Three years after Kansas's dissolution, original members Steve Walsh, Phil Ehart, and Richard Williams reformed by recruiting some new members. The result was Power, which was more suited to the 80's sound prevalent then, with more in common to Journey and Survivor's style rather than the days of "Dust In The Wind" or "Point of No Return."
The first single, "All I Wanted" was comparable to a mid-tempo Journey yearning love song laced with keyboards and pop sensibilities. It made the charts and the video led to a brief second wind.

Recorded at Philadelphia's Tower Theater on Valentine's Day 1989, King Biscuit Flower Hour Presents captures the latter-day Steve Morse lineup of Kansas -- and may even be a better way to get a representative idea of that group's sound than their somewhat uneven studio albums. This show dates from the supporting tour for In the Spirit of Things, the lineup's second album (Power being the first), and it captures the band in generally good form, although lead singer Steve Walsh's voice has begun to show signs of wear and tear. The newer songs are chosen and performed very well, and it's interesting to hear Morse weave his own flair into the classic hits from the old days. While not the definitive Kansas concert album, it's certainly a worthwhile one for fans.

This is a very rough recording, and, as has been noted, Walsh's vocals are not his best, but it's still commendable. However, it is definitely not on the same level as "Two For The Show" or "Device Voice Drum".
Kerry Livgren makes a "guest" appearance on "Dust In The Wind". I wonder if this was done just to give the album a bit of a push sales-wise..."Hey, Kerry Livgren's on it!"
There is also an old recording of the hard blues "Lonely Street" done with the original lineup, which is actually better than most of the rest of the album.
It's not horrible. Listening to it brings back good memories

But, above all, It really ROCKS. Everyone I have played it for likes it. I have been a Kansas fan for years, but this album gave me a whole new view of them

In 1970, Kerry Livgren and Phil Ehart combined their two separate bands (Saratoga and White Clover, respectively) into The Kansas Band -- which also included vocalists Lynn Meredith and Joel Warne, bassist Dave Hope, keyboardists Don Montre and Dan Wrifght, and saxophonist Larry Baker. Livgren and Ehart split the band up in 1971, however, and each pursued separate bands. Livgren and Meredith formed a new version of Kansas with Don Montre, Dan Wright, John Bolton, and two others, while Ehart reformed White Clover with bassist Dave Hope, guitarist Rich Williams, vocalist/songwriter Steve Walsh, and violinist Robby Steinhardt. Although his band recorded a demo tape in 1973, Ehart felt that White Clover needed a second songwriter to complement Walsh and invited Livgren to join the band; Livgren agreed. The band changed its name to Kansas, and was signed to Kirshner Records in 1974.
