The guitarists have obviously studied (and worshipped) at the feet of
guitar gods like Yngwie Malmsteen, Tipton/Downing, and Smith/Murray (or
Murray/Gers, or Smith/Gers, etc.). The tracks here are filled with slick
guitar leads and blazing solos, which seem to be the songs’ focal
points. The music around them, though, fails to excite, almost as if the
band wrote these songs just to show off how well they can shred. The
music gets no help from the production, which attempts to complete the
band’s old school feel, but mostly makes the recording sound amateurish
and of demo quality.

Widow are of that school where they mix in classic metal sounds with a
flourish or two of 70's hard rock guitar stylings, and this time they
also throw in some rather bad Children of Boredom-ish harsh vocals. I'm
not opposed to this kind of thing in principle, but these are just not
done well, and they don't complement the music at all, sounding more
hardcore than cool. Other than that, the songwriting is solid on this
album, with good riffs and some classy leads. The vocals are solid, if
unspectacular, and they get you there, but this band could use a better
singer. The songs range from killer slabs of metal killing like "Beware
The Night" and "I'll Make You A Star" to sillier songs like "Teacher's
Pet". The lyrics are not terrible serious a lot of the time, but the
songs rock.

Widow are definitely a band that lets its influences show. Inspired by
the greats, including but not limited to Maiden, Priest, and King
Diamond. Unfortunately this makes Widow sound pretty much like a retro
band. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it somewhat puts a ceiling
over the band. Due to a lack of originality Widow probably won't become
legends of their genre. Other than a few modern touches here and there,
Widow sound more or less like a generic tribute band to '80s metal.

Culling from the prime works of the usual suspects like Maiden,
Priest, and even Manowar, Widow grapple with arena-ready melodies and
racy guitar leads throughout this 12-song offering. You'd have to be
comatose to not find stock in "Take Hold of the Night," a song bolstered
by the fun and flighty vocals of John Wooten, who busts out one of the
year's more memorable choruses in this track. Not to be outdone, the
punchy "Embrace It" and aggressive, but palpable "Behind the Light" are
good enough to satiate those in search of relatively harmless metal
anthems with teeth.
