Curiously, just as it had happened with their chief inspiration, Alice
Cooper, a decade earlier, by the time they released final album, Master
of Disguise, in 1989, Lizzy Borden (the band) had been dismantled and
overwhelmed by Lizzy Borden the persona and singer, with only drummer
Joey Scott Harges surviving from the original lineup, and that's because
he was Lizzy's brother!

Originally hit the stores in 1986, as this was Lizzy Borden's 2nd
album. Some might say this band resembles somewhat of a Poison or Spinal
Tap rip-off. You decide. I've always liked this '90's metal act. Tunes
here I liked best were the heavy duty "Notorious", "Terror On The Town",
"Love Kills" {my personal anthem} and this disc's most notable track,
the title cut "Menace To Society". Line-up: Lizzy Borden-vocals, Alex
Nelson and Gene Allen-guitars, Mike Davis-bass (?) and Joey Scott
Harges-drums. Lizzy's biggest influence is obviously Alice Cooper.
Should draw in old school fans and followers of Lazz Rockit, Overkill,
Raven, Sanctuary and possibly Manilla Road. Not a bad pick.

Album begins with the 1987 EP Terror Rising, which was released before
Visual Lies which is, ironically, my favorite Lizzy album. The first
track gave me high hopes. I love "White Rabbits" which was originally
recorded by Jefferson Airplane. A fast, furious, and creative rocker
with Alice in Wonderland lyrics "When logic and proportion have fallen
soggy dead and the white knight is talking backwards and the red queen
is off with her head." I've never heard the original version, but this
one kicks! Unfortunately, it is all down hill from there. The punk
"Don't Touch Me There" (originally done by the Tubes, I think) which
includes guest vocalist Betsy from Bitch, is just silly. It is not
Lizzy. "Catch Your Breath" is OK. It starts out as a slower, ballad
track and then rocks out. It is not that memorable, though. "Terror
Rising" is mostly distorted spoken word with Lizzy telling the evil
creation in his mind that he must go. Of course, the evil one disagrees.
It doesn't really go anywhere and fades out.
The bonus EP is Give
`Em the Axe which was Lizzy's debut recording in 1984. Again, the best
track is the first. The title track flat out kicks! Quintessential Lizzy
brand of ferocious power metal with wicked lyrics. Excellent rocker!
"Kiss of Death" is highlighted by Iron Maiden-esque guitar riffs.

One of the most underrated metal bands in history, Lizzy Borden went
all out for their fans and that determination and devotion is evident on
the disc. Like the previous reviewer stated, they DO sound a bit like
early Iron Maiden, but along with the brilliant technical guitar work
and melodies, they manage to instill a darkly fun sense of gory glee
with their horror film and pulp novel-like lyrics. I originally bought
this on vinyl around 1988 and it sounded great then. On CD, it's an
unbelievable live experience. It is a MUST for any member of the Lizzy
Borden Axe Club and is a great primer for prospective ones.

I understand that Lizzy Borden's over the top image and stage antics
were necessary for him to gain the attention he needed to break through
in an era where image was everything, but I can't help but think that it
was precisely that image that has kept a lot of "serious" metal fans
from checking out Lizzy's material. It's a shame too, because when you
get to the actual music Lizzy Borden was releasing, particularly around
1987's Visual Lies, you'll find some surprisingly mature heavy metal
that is not too far removed from early Fates Warning, Crimson Glory,
Helstar...

This is a great album of 80's metal. I don't think there is one bad
song on it. All the songs are Lizzy Borden at it's best. The best songs
are American Metal, Flesheater, and Rod Of Iron. The only downfall of
this disc is the production isn't very good.(would like to see it
remastered) If you're interested in 80's metal you can't go wrong with
Lizzy Borden. They were (and are) far superior to other 80's
bands.(Motley Crue, Ratt, etc.)
