I happen to like this album, a little history of the band for you,
"Time Tells No Lies" was released in 1981, "Throwing Shapes" when the
band was called "Stratus" with Bernie Shaw of Uriah Heep on lead vocals
was released in 1984, then they released four albums in the 90's then
two albums were released in the 00's before this "Best Of" was released,
two more albums were released after the Best Of album came out, there
were singles and EP's that were released in the 80's but most of there
material was released after 1990.

Recorded live in Forth Worth, Texas at the Ridglea Theater on
September 17, 2005. "Reloaded" marks the return of one of the more
underrated bands from the 70's Southern Rock scene. Thirty years later
and this band sounds as good as ever. The recording is spotless, yet
they don't lose and ounce of the hard n heavy rock and roll. The album
starts of with one of the band's hardest rocking songs, "Back in the
Alley". A brilliant song with a blues based song not unlike Blackfoot.
One of the big standout cuts here is the melodic, country rock song
"Stars & Scars". A beautiful track that easily could have been a hit
in the 70's, had this band had a bit more exposure and some radio push.
Of course, one of the tracks I was looking forward to hearing the most
was "Mean to You Queenie", a classic Southern rock track that is brought
to life on this live platter. "Nicole" is probably Point Blank's most
well known track, and the closest they ever came to writing a song for
the radio.

Praying Mantis have turned in a very solid album here bordering on
commercial in nature ? mixing hard rock elements with more straight
ahead melodic rock and even some AOR melodies ? albeit delivered with a
more powerful base.
The band is another act with a long rich history,
one with different selection of lead vocalists and other musicians
along the way. But they are still here. The founding Troy Brothers are
still the foundation of the band, so the direction is not going to be
too unfamiliar to long time fans.

Several semi-respectable old style hard rocks bands rode the New Wave
Of British Heavy Metal in the early 80's and believed that updating
their sound to give it a more commercial edge might win them new found
success. Uriah Heep are a prime example of this philosophy. These
unabashed dinosaurs of 70's hard rock decided to go even further with
their change in style and tread the syrupy waters of AOR on their 14th
studio release, 'Abominog', with it's cover art that seemed purposely
designed to appeal to Iron Maiden fans of the time.

"Head First" was Uriah Heep's 15th studio album and it was released in
May 1983. This is the 2nd album album that featured the critically
acclaimed line-up: Peter Goalby; Mick Box; Bob Daisley; John Sinclair;
Lee Kerslake. The band one more chance to get back on top. "Abominog"
was highly successful, charting in many countries, and it was praised by
the critical press. The band's style had been recaptured and recovered,
and it seemed like there was no way back now. With "Abominog", the
traditional fans finally had something to cheer for, and the constant
failure of the band's previous albums seemed to had been forgotten.
"Head First" was produced by Ashley Howe and he tried to rebuild the
style and the success that was found in "Abominog". This album, then, is
the natural successor to "Abominog". So it would have just as good as
the band's previous album. Or even better, actually. Well, it's not.

XEX takes its heavy metal seriously - maybe a little too seriously.
XEX isn't even a word, "it's a symbol that is as unique as our music,"
the Boise trio claims. Whatever the case, "Anything Goes" is an apt
title for what amounts to an ambitious alternative-metal therapy
session. The CD's apocalyptic, spoken-word intro conjures up laughable
images of Motley Crue's "Shout at the Devil." But afterward, XEX blends
precise, minimalist bass lines and drumming with tortured, armored-saint
vocals ("You will bow down before me!) and massively processed, detuned
guitar chords, XEX tells a melodramatic lyrical tale (complete with
spooky echoes), executes quirky ax gear-shifts (from acoustic to
skull-compressing) and sneaks in shreddin' solos. Even when XEX is
laughing at itself - check out "Don't Tell William," a fist-waving
adaptation of William Tell's famed overture - the group delivers with
utter density. "Anything Goes" is dark, deliberate and anvil-heavy,
leaving you fatigued, as if you've taken sledgehammer shots to both
shoulders. Feel XEX's pain.

couple of layers of keys for good measure.
Bugsy Malone didn’t get
the time to develop their sound further and record their masterpiece
later on in their career as this is the only platter they ever released.

XEX's disc "Mixed Signals" is at times very heavy, at times emotional,
and at times just fun. The song "Get Shit Faced" is particularly
amusing. The technicality on this disc waxes and wanes, there is some
excellent guitar work, and nice drumming. The vocals from song to song
are all over the place in style. Almost every song is different, track
6, "Creature" has double bass, crazy leads, and death vocals with
clean(er) parts thrown in. You can feel like you popped in The Mentors
one second, Offspring the next, Alice in Chains after that, then Seven
Mary Three next. And the list goes on in influences and styles from 80's
rock bands to metal bands, 90's grunge to recent rock styles. You can
even find classical made metal with songs like track 8, "Wolfgang's 40",
and "Amadeus Jig" which are pretty cool and kind of funny.

The band consists of three guys that have been playing together, in
some form, since 1987. De Varona met guitarist Bryan Maddox in junior
high. After many bands, and many years XEX came along. They were just
messing around, getting drunk in the basement, and as De Varona states,
"we found ourselves playing shows, even though it wasn't our intention."
Now, they are releasing their first album Anything Goes, which is a
motto as apt as "Beaters and Shades." Although the album draws heavily
from traditional metal influences, the music is complex and varied. They
show their versatility with some more acoustic, melodic songs scattered
through out.

Wild’s history is vague at best, though it is known that the band came
to life in Los Angeles in 1985. Known then as “The Wild”, the band
featured multi-instrumentalist, Dizzy Reed, of Guns ‘n Roses fame. The
band were a fixture on the club circuit for several years before being
offered a one-off deal from Columbia Records. Essentially a duo in the
studio, Reed and vocalist Todd Barrone handled all of the chores (along
with producer Andy Wallace) in creating their self-titled debut, which
hit stores in early 1988.

Nevada Beach has a sound that I would call a cross between Dirty
Looks, Britny Fox and Great White. Singer Hank Decken reminds me of
Henrik Ostergaard from Dirty Looks, but while that band has a style
similar to AC/DC, Nevada Beach’s sound is more of a hard rock/pop metal
sound.

Nightmare is a really good album from start to finish. It has a nice
mixture of metal songs like Nightmare, Welcome To The Family, Natural
Born Killer, and God Hates Us, while balancing itself with some
mid-tempo rockers like the old school Metallica sounding Buried Alive.
Most important of course, these guys can really play. The drumming is
outstanding as expected, the vocals have enough variation to remain
interesting, and the guitars, while heavy at times, keep the technical
aspects on display with some nice harmonies and solos. I'm not usually
into the more recent class of metal music, but Avenged Sevenfold has the
talent to keep them going through another decade and beyond.

"Omega" is the second album since the reformation of the four original
members of Asia, and it shows further musical, lyrical and even,
spiritual development within the band.
Sonically, what is most
noticeable about "Omega" is the presence of John Wetton's bass guitar
high in the mix. Along with Carl Palmer's stellar percussion work,
Asia's rhythm section provides a driving beat that hasn't been heard to
this extent on any previous Asia album. The opening track, "Finger on
the Trigger," is a real tour-de-force. Who said 60-year olds can't still
rock? Others like "Listen Children," and "Light the Way" rock with a
renewed energy.
