After
giving birth to thrash with Kill 'Em All, Metallica began refining
their innovations with Ride the Lightning, which added a bit more
maturity and compositional quality. Master of Puppets is a much larger
step in the same direction, and had the band incorporating more
progressive elements into their music. It'd be hard to count the metal
bands doing half the pioneering things Metallica was doing.
The
acoustic, quiet introduction to "Battery" explodes under an aggressive
onslaught of hyperkinetic, muscular riffs and thick, heavy arrangements
that characterize the entire album. That's not to say it's redundant,
though. All eight songs are excellent, featuring enough variation of
tempo and texture to ensure that they never get boring, which is crucial
when some songs extend for eight minutes ("Master of Puppets,"
"Disposable Heroes," "Orion"). Cripes, you could dissect the riffery of
the title track and probably create half a dozen normal metal songs.
That"s part of Metallica's appeal: they cram a ton of ideas into their
music, but all songs are perfectly crafted without the slightest sense
of disjointed songwriting.

Don't let that classical-guitar-ish opening to "Fight Fire with Fire"
fool you--Ride the Lightning packs a heavy-metal wallop. While not as
ambitious as the subsequent Master of Puppets, this early Metallica
album is indubitably one of their best. Thematically, it explores death
and dying from myriad points of view: nuclear war ("Fight Fire with
Fire"), electric-chair execution (the title track), and drowning
("Trapped Under Ice"). Interestingly, the best track on this album is
probably "Fade to Black," a slower, more introspective song about
suicide. There's also "Creeping Death," which remains a concert
favorite. An excellent mix of rapid-fire guitar riffs, rip-roaring
solos, and singer James Hetfield's trademark growl, this is thrash metal
at its finest. Very highly recommended.

The $5.98 EP: The Garage Days Re-Revisited' is a killer Metallica
album. Minus the album status, of course. These 5 songs feature
Metallica at their heaviest, and it's really cool to hear them tackle
everything from The Misfits to Diamond Head on this record.

Helpless (originally recorded by Diamond Head)-A good song originally,
but Metallica just rocks it here. It has a very garage band sound mixed
with the Black Sabbath-'70s metal style combined. A great cover.

The Small Hours (originally recorded by Holocaust)-Again, a very good
song, but Metallica makes it even better. The song is a slower song, but
it is just as heavy as anything else they did. James' vocals are very
passionate, and Lars' drum beat is amazing. A must listen if you are a
Metallica fan.
3. The Wait (originally recorded by Killing
Joke)-One of Metallica's best songs period. This is miles better than
the Killing Joke version, and once again, Metallica succeeds in making
this song their own. Another must listen for a Metallica fan.
4.
Crash Course In Brain Surgery (originally recorded by Budgie)-This
record has a garageband sound to it that no other Metallica song has.
This is an essential song from Metallica; Lars' drumming on this song is
superb. It's not one of his standout pieces by no means, nor is it one
of the band's, but it's a must-listen.
5. Last Caress/Green Hell
(originally recorded by The Misfits)-And Metallica closes the record out
in style. The whole band rocks out on this one, which carries a very
garage sound as well. Essential for the Metallica fan to listen to.

Day On The Green was the name of a concert series in Oakland,
California, presented by promoter Bill Graham and his company Bill
Graham Presents. Held at the Oakland Coliseum Stadium, these events
began in 1973 and continued into the early 1990s. The last Day On The
Green overseen by Graham took place the same month as his death in a
helicopter crash in 1991. There was a series of Day On The Green shows
the following year in the wake of Graham's death, but no more have been
promoted since then. There were other shows in 1994-97 at the Oakland
Coliseum Stadium - namely U2, Pink Floyd, and the Rolling Stones -but
these were not "Days On The Green" by definition because they occurred
at night and also because Bill Graham had passed so "Days on the Green"
had become a thing of the past.
