This is the third album from Solitude Aeturnus, but the first one I
bought. I only wish I'd heard this band long before! First, for
perspective, a little about the band itself: Solitude Aeturnus is a
"Doom metal" band, so their lyrics are less than optomistic, and the
music is for the most part slow and heavy. Black Sabbath is one of their
influences, apparently. What sets this band apart from other doom metal
bands, in my opinion, is the quality of musicianship and the singer's
voice. (I'm no expert on doom metal, though.) The vocalist doesn't try
to sound scary or even scream much, he just has a naturally great voice
for this type of music.

Solitude Aeternus was formed in 1987 by guitarist John Perez. It was
influenced by power metal bands (Metallica, Jag Panzer, Metal Church,
Fates Warning), the early crop of doom metal bands (Candlemass, St.
Vitus, Trouble, Pentagram), as also psychedelic and 70's hard rock. In
1990 Solitude Aeternus entered Dallas Sound Lab to record their debut
'Into the Depths of Sorrow'. After the disastrous first mix, the record
was remixed at Sound Logic Studios. Unfortunately, further delays
occurred as King Klassic failed to provide the proper financial support
for the release. Solitude Aeternus singed a contract with Roadrunner
Records and Into the Depths of Sorrow saw the light in July of 1991, a
whole year after the recording. The debut proved to be worthy of
patience - the heavy, yet strangely sublime sound followed by brilliant
technique and a gloomy atmosphere proved that speed is not what counts
the most in metal.

Get ready for an hour of despair with the uncanny doom metallers from
Texas! The tracklist of their very first DVD release is comprised of
songs filmed and recorded live on their visit to Poland, and includes
songs from their latest album "Alone" as well as from some of their
previous releases (from the classic debut "Into the Depths of Sorrow",
from "Through the Darkest Hour", "Downfall", and the cult album
"Adagio").

What you need to know is that vocalist Robert Lowe is possessed of a
soaring, emotive voice that manages to be as viscerally satisfying as it
is technically impressive, and that the band has all but written the
book on American doom metal. They single-handedly carry the torch for
this melodic, epic form, equaling the grandeur of CANDLEMASS at their
peak, and possessing the class and staid grace of prime Dio-era SABBATH.
Big words? Yes, but if you've fallen under the SOLITUDE spell, you know
it's all true.

Personally, I think Solitude Aeturnus have never had bad album in
their career. Adagio is no exception, although it's the least spoken of
all their offerings up to date. Lyrically it focuses around the concept
of faith and belief, God and religion. Musically, it's as good as
anything this band has put out. As a bonus, you also get an awesome
cover of Black Sabbath's Heaven & Hell. So what more could you want?
