It is debatable whether ‘Dark Millenium’, Psychotic Waltz’s second posthumous release (after ‘Live & Archives’) can really be called a Psychotic Waltz release at all. Only tracks 10 to 16 are actual recordings by the band. The first 7 songs are written by guitarist Brian McAlpine and are collectively called ‘Penetralia’, a ‘soundtrack for reaching the higher spheres into narcotic dances’. Tracks 8 and 9 are written by Brian McAlpine and Dan Rock and would later appear on Dan Rock’s solo project ‘Darkstar’. The final tracks are early live songs and covers, and one studio cover of Black Sabbath’s ‘Disturbing the Priest’ that also appears on the release of ‘Into the Everflow’.

The music is mainly complex prog metal, but psychedelic influences which they build on in their next album, ‘Mosquito’, are also present (especially evident in their lyrics: ‘I’m a tripper in a space out jam/Flying in a circus of a freakshow band’). Comparisons to other bands are quite difficult to make though as they sound little like their prog metal peers. They do have a certain (slight) similarity to older Black Sabbath however, but mainly because of the gloomy sound throughout the album, not really the music itself. Jethro Tull have also been named as a major influence by the band, but this is more noticeable in the flute-led songs from their other albums that are absent here.

After creating 2 masterpieces of complex and technical progressive metal with ‘A Social Grace’ and ‘Into the Everflow’, many Psychotic Waltz fans were disappointed with their third release, ‘Mosquito’. Although Psychotic Waltz had always had psychedelic influences in their music, leading their unique style to be dubbed ‘hippie metal’ by some fans, it was only here that the progressive influences that overpowered their older work were almost completely abandoned and replaced with far a more noticeable psychedelic sound than before. If Syd Barrett had continued making music after leaving Pink Floyd and made a metal album, it would probably sound like this.

cd 1: a bootleg recording from Hamburg (Germany), on 1st July 1990, on the "A Social Grace" Tour; it's quite an interesting 'coincidence' that this happens to be Buddy Lackey's (the vocal singer) birthday and, also, the anniversary of the band (they formed on 1.07.1986)...; the sound is not very good, but, hey, it's just a bootleg (about the only PW taped show there is out there...); the track list includes all tracks on their debut LP (except "Another Prophet Song"), 2 new tracks(featured on the 2nd) + a rather unexpected Beatles cover
("I Am The Walrus");
cd 2-contains various and VERY RARE tracks; Dan Rock (quitars) managed to remaster the best way he could the first two demos of the band (from the the days when they went by the name of Aslan), and included some other features like their first track ever (the incredible "Burn The Night"), a live Ozzy cover, some unfinished tracks, little band 'gadgets' some instrumental solos...basically all the PW-related material he could find at that time...the sound is still pretty rough (as some of the recordings were made on 4/8 tracks) but if you like the music herein, it won't bother you that much
i must add the superb artwork of Mike Clift, who created a masterpiece cover for the album
