Girlschool are a British all girl hard rock group. After Bronze Records ceased to exist in 1984 Girlschool were left with new material but no record company. Mercury records released this brilliant album in 1985 but due to lack of promotion and only being released in the USA it was almost totally ignored by the record buying public. Until recently it was a rare album on vinyl and has still not been released on compact disc. There is a new 4 CD box set release by Cherry Red Records in England of the 4 albums that make up the complete Bronze Records releases. It is a shame that nobody seems to be able to get the rights to release this album on CD.

GIRLSCHOOL were a sadly overlooked heavy metal band made up of (guess what!) girls! But despite what you might think of a band with girls playing their instruments, GIRLSCHOOL played with such an intensity and a knack for hooky, catchy songs that some of their male counterparts twisted in shame. Despite being spawned during the NEW WAVE OF BRITISH HEAVY METAL's peak, GIRLSCHOOL's sound owed much to fellow punks like DISCHARGE and GBH and of course, MOTORHEAD, with whom they made a friendship that lasts even to this date. The guitar sounds are decidedly brutal, making any of DEF LEPPARD's records of the time (1980-1983) sound positively tame in comparison. HIT AND RUN is GIRLSCHOOL at its most intense, heaviest and fastest, yet the songs were really memorable and had this had a more "subtle" production it would have been an international hit.

And with their early releases becoming increasingly difficult to locate nowadays, a compilation such as the 2007 double-disc set The Singles comes in quite handy. The collection weighs in at a hefty 37 tracks total, and you'll quickly discover that Girlschool rocked just as ferociously as their male counterparts, and that the majority of their tunes had more in common with punk (in other words, few extended solos or fairy/dragon-esque lyrics are included).
