Being German power metal, the expectation is for a gargantuan guitar riff to barge in straightaway, but Brainstorm makes you wait. The beginning of album opener “Forsake What I Believe” starts with mildly spooky forest sounds overlaid with a sinister cello melody. As the intro becomes more dramatic it adds horns and other stringed instruments. When the band finally breaks in the riff is slower than expected and very deliberate; it seems like Brainstorm continues to really hold their full force in check. The verse continues the trend, with a subdued vocal line over a subdued bass line. The music grows bit by bit, and by the final seconds the explosion is nigh, but the song ends right before we want it to.

This album pretty much picks up where previous albums Liquid Monster and Soul Temptation leave off. Razor sharp heavy riffing, killer songwriting, catchy hooks, and the world class power vocals of Andy Frank! There is a little more use of keyboards for backround atmosphere but they don't detract from the heaviness at all. Also the sound is huge and powerful like always but this time even more to ensure the listener is fully beaten down and crushed. You can tell a lot of attention to detail was paid with some eletronic elements added and specific layers of depth are present as well.

Brainstorm started of as just another power metal band back in 1989. Over course of 8 years, they started mixing more and more Thrash into their Power Metal. Guitar players Torsten Ihlenfeld & Milan Loncaric's riffs got faster, heavier and started to include more of an oriental feel to them (think "Wherever I May Roam" by Metallica). The band is very popular in Germany and Hungary, but are pretty unknown in the rest of the world. I think they are one of the most underrated bands of all time, also one of the heaviest. The production is great for a debut album, my only complaint is the sound of the snare drum. "Hungry" is a solid debut and also has a really cool album cover. I you like darker power metal, than you will definitely like this one.

 This is an interesting concept by Metal Blade. They've released a "2-disc" best-of collection by German power metal masters Brainstorm, but it's only available in MP3 format, not as a physical product.
Just Highs No Lows: 12 Years of Persistence features 24 songs from Brainstorm's Metal Blade career. There's nothing from Hungry or Unholy, but those albums weren't that great to begin with. In addition to the "hits" there are also eight rare songs to tempt those of us who already have the Brainstorm albums. They include live songs, b-sides, and songs that were previously exclusive to the Japanese market. Edguy did something similar with their Hall of Flames collection, and it worked out pretty well.
