If you love .38 Special (which I'm sure you probably do if you're
reading this), then this CD will not disappoint you at all. Sure, as
previously mentioned, not ALL of their great songs are represented here,
but the ones that they do are done very well. When I purchased this
right here on Amazon.com, I was a little concerned since it had been so
many years since I heard these boys play live, but on first listen my
worries were totally disspelled. Don Barnes's voice, although it has
clearly aged a bit (he doesn't hit most of the higher notes he used to
reach, plus he doesn't sing lead as often on here) is still in fine
shape, and Donnie Van Zant still has that great bloozy Van Zant voice.
(You know what ah'm talkin' 'bout!)

38 Special never quite made it on their southern rock roots, despite
having a lead singer name Van Zant, as in Donnie, younger brother of
Lynyrd Skynyrd vocalist Ronnie.
The band regrouped and shifted away
from a more traditional country rock sound and plugged in a tad more
distortion and became a hard rockin’ southern delight.
After a
smidgeon of success with 1980's Rockin’ into the Night, the band
released Wild-Eyed Southern Boys the following year and it went Top 20,
and sold Platinum. The next year Special Forces went Top 10 and sold
another million plus albums making 38 Special rock stars.
Now, BGO
Records has released a CD that has both classic albums on one disk. The
hits are all over this sucker including from Wild-Eyed Southern Boys
there is “Hold on Loosely,” the title track and “Fantasy Girl.” Special
Forces continues with “Caught Up in You,” “Chain Lightinin’ and “You
Keep Runnin’ Away.”

The combination of power chords and catchy hooks without compromising
their rocking style is due to songwriter Jim Peterik, to gain better
fame in Survivor. He helped them through Wild Eyed Southern Boys and
Special Forces, their fourth and fifth albums. Among the songs he helped
them with was the "Jean Genie" meets Bad Company's "Can't Get Enough Of
Your Love" stomp of "Rockin' Into The Night," which was a sample of
what they would turn out over the late 70's and 80's.

Probably the premiere recording by these Wild Eyed Southern Boys. The
first three songs If I Had Been The One, Back Where You Belong, and One
Time For Old Times received a tone of well deerved airplay back in the
eighties. Heck the video on If I Had Been The One featured some
beautiful footage of horses galloping against a country skyline.
Nonetheless, If I Had Been The One is a timeless track with beautiful
guitar embellishments, passionate vocals of love lost, and stunning
hooks galore.
Not to omit the other album tracks, but at the worst
they are harmless and at the best they are pretty darn captivating.
Twentieth Century Fox rocks with a fine southern charm and Long Distance
Affair has some strong hooks on the chorus. Don Barnes and Donnie Van
Zandt are both in fine form vocally.

Artist : 38 Special Country : USA Release : Rockin' Into The Night Year : 1979 Genre : Hard Rock File Type : mp3 320 Info: By
its third album, .38 Special discovered how to fuse fun-lovin' Southern
rock with a formula that would bring the band commercial attention.
Even though the album failed to put a single into the Top 40, the songs
gather more steam than the group's previous attempts and begin to show
the talents of individual members, turning some of the attention away
from the novelty of sporting two drummers. "Rockin' into the Night" is a
clean-shaven, built-for-radio tune, boosted by Don Barnes and Jeff
Carlisi's indiscrete guitar work, while "Stone Cold Believer" rocks a
little harder with its gear-shifting guitar riff.

This album has a lot of good music on it. the point is it has three
truly great songs. the best one is "caught up in you" arguably the best
song they have ever made. then there is the bone chilling and super cool
"chain lightning" and finally "you keep runnin'", this song is a mellow
foot tapper. so if you like .38 SPECIAL you WILL like this CD.

Artist : 38 Special Country : USA Release : Bone Against Steel Year : 1991 Genre : Hard Rock File Type : mp3 320 Info:
Though .38 Special was never in a class with Lynyrd Skynyrd, the
Allman Brothers, the Outlaws or the Marshall Tucker Band, some of its
late-1970s and early- to mid-1980s output was spirited and quite
enjoyable. But by the early 1990s, the Southern band had pretty much run
out of steam. For the most part, Bone Against Steel is uneventful and
much too slick for its own good. Tame, run-of-the-mill corporate rock
tunes like "Signs of Love," "You Be the Dam, I'll Be the Water" and "The
Sound of Your Voice" sound like third-rate Journey, and don't hold a
candle to some of Special's earlier efforts.

A budget-priced .38 Special collection, this set features 10 of the
Southern rock group's finest tunes, including the radio anthems "Rockin'
into the Night," "Somebody Like You," and "If I'd Be the One." Although
there are other compilations that include a wider range of songs by
Donnie Van Zant and company, this disc is good for those seeking a
concise selection.

38 Special (also written .38 Special or Thirty-Eight Special) is an
American rock band that was formed by neighborhood friends Don Barnes
and Donnie Van Zant in 1974 in Jacksonville, Florida.[1] The band's
first two albums had a strong southern rock influence. By the early
1980s, 38 Special shifted to a more accessible arena rock style without
abandoning its southern rock roots. This shift helped to usher in a
string of successful albums and singles.

An excellent visual of both 38 Special and Lynrd Skynrd still doing
what they do best. Very enjoyable performances of both bands performing
their greatest hits live. Of course the band line ups have changed a
little, but the songs live on with great music and vocals.
