Just about every metal fan knows the name Pantera. The Texas-based
band was a huge metal presence in the `90s. In a decade when metal's
popularity was in decline, the heavy, thrashing Pantera became almost a
household name. What's less well-known is that the band had been active
since the early `80s, recording a series of albums in the glam/hair
metal style before releasing their 1990 breakthrough Cowboys From Hell.
Originally
released in 1984, Projects in the Jungle was the band's second album.
Like 1983's Metal Magic, Projects in the Jungle is essentially a glam
metal album. The young band was clearly influenced by KISS, as well as
some of the flashier L.A. bands. They sound a bit like Keel and King
Kobra here. If you're a glam metal fan, this is actually a pretty good
album. The songs are cheesy, but the guitar work is pretty sweet and the
production is worlds better than the debut. Terry Glaze's high-pitched
wailing takes some getting used to, though. Like all the early Pantera
albums, Projects in the Jungle has some very cheesy, very amateur cover
artwork.

Originally
released in 1985, I Am the Night was the band's third album. It's still
by and large a hair metal album, but you can hear the band moving into
thrashier territory. In particular, the guitar riffs are noticeably
faster and the rhythms are heavier. The band still sounds a lot like
Britny Fox here, thanks in large part to Terry Glaze's raspy vocals and
the songwriting style, which tends to focus on rock anthems and yes the
occasional sappy ballad. It's a hair metal album with some killer guitar
work, but a hair metal album nonetheless. Standout tracks are the
rocking "I Am the Night," "Onward We Rock" and the very metal
"Valhalla." Like all the early Pantera albums, I Am the Night has some
very cheesy, very amateur cover artwork.

Although Vulgar Display of Power remains Pantera's best and definitive
album, Cowboys from Hell was the creative breakthrough that set the
stage for its conception. Not only were its demos responsible for
getting Pantera signed to a major label in the first place, but its
fresh musical perspective also gave them a much-needed blank slate with
which to conquer the 1990s and, first and foremost, erase their 1980s
failures. These failures were cataloged on no less than four
independently released LPs packed with largely derivative and thoroughly
unimpressive hair metal, and only the fourth of them even counted with
recently installed lead vocalist Phil Anselmo, whose broader influences
and irrepressible energy cannot be underestimated in altering Pantera's
fate.

"Cemetery Gates" is a power ballad by heavy metal band Pantera. The
song is the fifth track from Cowboys from Hell, the band's fifth album
and second with lead singer Phil Anselmo (though the band considers it
their first "true" album, officially ignoring their earlier independent
releases as it was their first album with the groove metal genre).
"Cemetery Gates" showcases Anselmo's vocal ability and range, concluding
with screaming high notes answered by Dimebag Darrell on guitar in a
trade off. This is the longest song Pantera ever recorded, clocking in
at 7:03

With its pioneering 'power groove' sound, Pantera leapt onto the metal
scene of 1990 with the landmark album COWBOYS FROM HELL. The Texan band
distinguished itself by offering up a potent mid-tempo version of the
typically fast-paced thrash metal style, resulting in a dense, crushing
sound that served as a solid foundation for Phil Anselmo's dynamic
growl-to-a-falsetto-in-seconds-flat voice. Although this collection only
features five tracks from the early-'90s one-two punch of COWBOYS FROM
HELL and VULGAR DISPLAY OF POWER, it serves as a good introduction to
the band's overall output. Pantera's career from the mid-'90s onward is
represented by fierce tracks such as "I'm Broken", "Becoming", "5
Minutes Alone", and "I'll Cast a Shadow", as well as the cover of Black
Sabbath's "Planet Caravan"

The
sound is excellent on all of the tracks. It sounds like the first 2 are
from the Monsters Of Rock in Russia, then the next 2 sound like they
are from that Foundations Forum show or whatever it's called off the CFH
home video. I know for sure that Heresy is because at the end it's got
that exact same "Pantera fu%$ing rips,aarrgghhh" at the end.

1988's POWER METAL sounds alot like a mix between early Metallica and
Judas Priest(Not that thats a bad thing). Alot of people forget that
Pantera were a run of the mill hair metal band in the early 80's with
albums like I AM THE NIGHT and METAL MAGIC. POWER METAL is different
though, it is the first to feature Phil Anselmo on vocals and the whole
band go for a more heavier approach. Dimebag Darrell plays phenomenal
guitar work here(As usual) and even sings on the last song P.S.T 88 and
sounds alot like early James Hettfield singing. Songs like OVER AND OUT,
WE'LL MEET AGAIN, DOWN BELOW, DEATH TRAP, HARD RIDE, and BURNN show
that with Phil Anselmo on board there was alot of gelling going on.
