fter a long hiatus The Big F returned in 93 with the Patience
Peregrine EP. Of course by this time the musical landscape had a
slightly different look to it (sarcasm fully intended). The bedrock laid
by bands like, Fishbone, Jane's Addiction, early Soundgarden, etc and
of course the first Big F album, helped paved the way for the explosion
of the Seattle bands.

How Sister Sin would fare when bassist and principle songwriter Chris
Bednarz left the band over a year ago was anyone's guess. I'm not sure
how they managed it, but the new songwriting duo of Jimmy Hiltula and
Dave Sundberg have perfectly crafted a new set of Sister Sin songs
without missing a beat. The crunchy guitars, powerful female vocals,
gang choruses and angst driven fist-in-the-air anthems that we all love,
and have come to expect, from these Swedish metal merchants have all
returned in spades.
I've said it numerous times before, but I'll
say it again -- in my opinion Liv is the premiere female vocalist in
metal today. Her authoritative voice easily takes control of each song,
singing with a confidence that occasionally borders on arrogance.
Meanwhile, Jimmy offers a very unique guitar tone and style to the
proceedings. It is probably those two distinct sounds that made the
songwriting transition flow so effortlessly between Switchblade
Serenades and True Sound Of The Underground.

Contemporary jazz/new-age pianist Keiko Matsui is better known, but
it’s her ex-husband Kazu Matsui who in the 1980s was one of the
architects of the quiet storm format named after a Smokey Robinson song
and album from 1975. Kazu Matsui, a master of the shakuhachi, or
Japanese flute, debuted in 1981 on a solo CD with friends Lee Ritenour,

At the very end of the classic period of thrash metal, meet Havoc
Mass. Almost surprisingly powerful for a late debut album, Killing The
Future is about as good an example of the characteristic sound of the
genre as any older release. Something particularly worth noting about
the band's style is the focused and compact songwriting approach - even
though this means that quite a few tracks sound somewhat samey, it
doesn't matter too much when the original formula is good enough. As
everything else including production, musicianship, and vocals appears
to be quite fine, it's hard not to find this album likeable, even
considering the obvious lack of truly new ideas. Although the entry
Havoc Mass made in the scene is probably not too well known, the result
is certainly worth another look.

It’s only fair to say that Nightlord‘s debut record ‘Approaching
Thunder‘ has stood the test of time, despite coming out just a few years
prior to the Middlesex quartet’s disbandment in 1993. Their recent
reunion has seen the band playing live shows here and there, including a
support act for Sepultura; and unless you’ve been able to catch them
onstage, your best bet is to hear their re-released back catalogue.
Whereas the material on their 1993/2010 EP ‘Cult of the Moon’ sounds
like a rather forced effort, ‘Approaching Thunder‘ stands as the
stronger offering.
Consisting of the first four tracks that the band
had recorded, plus four more left over from that session, the album
shows a greater sense of speed and punk vigour as compared to its
technically written follow-up. Frontman Ferenc Collins sounds more
comfortable shouting than he is singing, as the restraints of the latter
style mean he is unable to spit out his passion at the audience like he
can on this album.
Between the two records and their differing
styles, Nightlord are at their best when they hit hard and fast, and it
is ‘Approaching Thunder‘ where they shine.

This is a Black Sabbath album in name only (Tony Iommi is the only
original member present), but once you get past that fact, you can enjoy
this for what it REALLY is and that's a first-rate pure metal CD.
Nothing ground-breaking, but superb playing and excellent production
make it a winner. Ex-Deep Purple bassist/lead singer Glen Hughes takes
the vocals here and puts a bluesy spin on Iommi's trademark monster
riffs on tunes such as "In For The Kill," "Turn To Stone" and "Danger
Zone." Definitely the best of the Sabbath albums that didn't feature
Ozzy or Dio. Check it out!

Cyanotic's "Sapphire Season" can be a very enjoyable album given a
person's musical mood. If you are in the mood for melody that is never
cheesy, vocals that are "scruffy", with a blend of osdm that sometimes
enters odd riffing patterns, then "Sappire Season" may be the one for
you. The music won't blow your head off with excessive creativity and
sometimes can be a bit stagnant, but with the proper mindset, this
release can offer you many components of enjoyability and may even
inspire a few prospective listeners.

Britain isn't the first place you associate with progessive metal
(especially well played stuff !!!), but B.O.P. have gone some way to
re-adressing that on this album.
This is a concept album, although
don't let that frighten you, because with the exception of a few very
short narrative vocal passages you'd be none the wiser.

Joshua’s 1985 sophomore release Surrender has quite the interesting
history. Recorded in follow up to the groups 1983 Enigma debut The Hand
Is Quicker Than The Eye, the album initially came out on Polydor Records
and featured the line up of lead vocalist Jeff Fenholt, guitarist
Joshua Perahia, guitarist/vocalist Ken Tamplin, keyboardist Patrick
Bradley, bassist Loren Robinson and drummer Jo Galletta. Surrender was
later re-issued in 1992 by Ocean Records with the bonus track “Show Me
The Way” (that included Robyn Kyle Basauri – of Red Sea and Die Happy
fame – on lead vocals).

Tricks combines live versions of hits from the band's first three
studio albums with early demos and rarities from back in the days when
frontman Jeff Waters was toiling away in his basement playing just about
every instrument like a heavy metal reincarnation of Prince. There are
not one but two stereo-scorching, foot-to-the-floor versions each of
"Alison Hell," "Phantasmagoria," and "Gallery." Bag of Tricks is proof,
also, of how seriously Waters took his image as a one-man guitar army,
with mile-a-minute solos, barn-burning riffs, and everything louder than
everything else. Tricks is a good showcase for the band's influences
and its range: "Live Wire" wears its fondness for AC/DC on its sleeve;
"Gallery" is a reminder of their early flirtation with death metal; and
"Fantastic Things," with its melodic bent, is as close to spitting
distance of hair metal as Annihilator ever came.

In 1980 Ricochet recruited a new singer, Geoff Sewell and the bands

Traveling the road from hard rock to extreme metal has many twists and
turns. If you picture AOR rock to the left and extreme metal to the
right (no political insinuation intended), the bulk of my musical
attention sags somewhere to the right of center. Having interests that
span that entire spectrum, it is a refreshing feeling to explore that
extreme left and bask in pure tried and true rock ‘n’ roll every once in

The band, based in Liege/Belgium, started in 1982 with former bass
player CHRIS FORTHOMME and drummer MARC VAN NEYGHEM (aka "VANEG").
They're both in the band nowadays ! The first album "Wild child" was
released with vocalist STEVE SHORTER and DAN DUBOIS at the guitars.
"Wild child"was a self produced album sold only in Belgium and United
Kingdom and as the band quickly gained a lot of popularity especially
with their live performances they signed with the belgian label
"Mausoleum". The first release on Mausoleum was the album "Fn Guns", a
remix of a few Wild Child songs sold in Europe. The second album for
Mausoleum was "Nightmare", sold in Europe and the United States, the
band toured a lot in Belgium and "Nightmare" took good place in the
belgian charts and in a lot of european rock magazines.
