- *Hard Rock, Angry Tears
Since the early eighties Joey Sinopoli and Jack Ponti have been mates. It was from this friendship and mutual respect that Angry Tears was born. Both artists have had minor success with other projects - Joey with his own act Sinopoli and Jack with bands such as Surgin and most recently Baton Rouge. Finally, after many years, we have their first true collaboration. When Joey said that Angry Tears were a 'dirty garage rock n roll band' I wasn't sure what to expect. While Angry Tears are a much tougher outfit than Baton Rouge etc, there is still a strong hint of melody. What you have here is melodic rock done with a stripped back, bare bones approach.
After my initial listen to this I was not immediately hooked. Yet, after a few more spins this album did sneak up on me. It took a little while to get into the groove but once I did it was hard to get out of it. Most notable are the tracks 'Keep Tonite', 'Go Easy On Me', 'Other Side of The Night' and 'Angry Tears'. Jack and Andre have given the album a modern sound with the guitars and vocals very much at the forefront while the backing vocals are more understated. Joey's vocals are a tad unusual for this genre of music yet fit well within the Angry Tears sound and Jack Ponti's guitar work is reserved yet tasteful.
