Debut albums are always a bit rough, and it's obvious Mob Rules was still figuring out their true sound. The German band stuck pretty close to the power metal playbook here, sounding like equal parts Helloween (naturally) and Andre Matos-era Angra, with perhaps a bit of Stratovarius. I don't blame them; that sound was huge at the time. Still, it's hard to accept this kind of formulaic power metal after hearing the tight, polished melodic metal of Among the Gods.
