It Comes At Night (Remix) (Bonus Track)

Artist : Pretty Maids
Country : Denmark
Release : Pandemonium [Japan Edition]
Year : 2010
Genre : Heavy Metal
File Type : mp3 320

Info:

For the first time in their career they list the keyboard player as a member of the band. And the keyboards have a key spot in their sound. Still, the top notch production, and the vital song writing, makes 'Pandemonium' one of the heaviest Pretty Maids albums ever. It's like they read my write-up for 'Wake Up To The Real World' and decided to do something about it! (LOL, not really, but one is allowed to dream, right?) 'Pandemonium' really works an all levels, and will be a top contender for album of the year for me. Every fan of melodic metal owes it to themselves to buy this album.

Year : 2006
Genre : Heavy Metal
File Type : mp3 320

Info:

Another solid slab of melodic metal from our favorite Danish boys. It seems as though these guys can never let me down. Although I have to admit that this album took that extra spin to really get into. I'm not sure what my problem was, but I was almost disappointed with 'Wake Up To The Real World' at first. It might be the somewhat thin production that threw me for a loop. Because now I really enjoy this stellar CD. If anything, Pretty Maids have gone somewhat back to the sound of their earlier material. Many of the songs are quite heavy, and with a beefier sound, they would have been total throwback to the 80's. There are 2 reasons this is not the case as is though. 1. The mentioned production, and 2. There are maybe 1 or 2 ballads too many here. Don't get me wrong, I like the bands ballads also, I just don't need every second song to be one. Kudos for the excellent cover of Deep Purple's classic "Perfect Strangers" though. All in all a solid effort.

Artist : Pretty Maids
Country : Denmark
Release : Offside [Japan Edition]
Year : 1992
Genre : Heavy Metal
File Type : mp3 320

Info:

'Offside' was the EP that rounded out my otherwise complete Pretty Maids discography. This 5 track EP was really hard to find, but I finally lucked out and snagged a Japanese version off of eBay.
Released in July of 1992, this EP contains 5 more or less acoustic versions of 2 Pretty Maids originals, and 3 cover songs. However, both of the original songs are new, and were never on any of Pretty Maids' regular releases. Thin Lizzy's "Please Don't Leave Me" was also done for 'Sin-Decade', but here we get an acoustic version. "'39" is a Queen cover. These 4 tracks would later reappear on Pretty Maids' next album, 1993's 'Stripped'. So the only exclusive track on 'Offside' now is the remaining "Fly Away". This song was penned by Phil Lynnot and Jimmy Bain, and recorded for Bain's band, Wild Horses, debut album in 1980.
'Offside' is a great addition to the Pretty Maids catalogue. And since it features an exclusive track, it is a must for collectors.

Artist : Pretty Maids
Country : Denmark
Release : Sin-Decade [Japan Edition]
Year : 1992
Genre : Heavy Metal
File Type : mp3 320

Info:

This was the 3rd album I got a hold of from these Danish rockers. And it was good to hear that few things had changed since their earlier efforts. Pretty Maids has got to be one of the most consistent bands around! 'Sin-Decade' is full of melodic metal-tracks, with smaller hints of hard rock or AOR. This album is also more even throughout the whole album. I have a hard time picking favorites here, because all the songs are great. But one song stick out, namely the last track: "Please Don't Leave Me". It's written by 2 gentlemen, called John Sykes and Phil Lynott. Also known as members of Thin Lizzy. This cover-tune gave Pretty Maids a minor hit, as the track was also released as a single.

11. When It All Comes Down (Bonus Track)

Artist : Pretty Maids
Country : Denmark
Release : Scream [Japan Edition]
Year : 1994
Genre : Heavy Metal
File Type : mp3 320

Info:

'Scream' is yet another stunning piece of work. And the quality of the material is not so much that these guys are the best technical players out there. But they are very skilled at what they do nonetheless. Straight forward melodic metal is what they do, and they continue to do it, no matter what the trend! This album is from 1995, but it sounds just as fresh as 'Future World' did in 1987, and 'Sin-Decade' did in 1992. I also hear that they have added just a touch of the L.A. groove here and there. The production is stellar, and for that we can thank one Flemming Rasmussen. You might remember him from when Metallica still sounded like a thrash metal band. If you haven't discovered this awesome band yet, it's about time!
Killer tracks: Rise, Scream, Walk Away, In A World Of Your Own, Anytime Anywhere

Artist : Pretty Maids
Country : Denmark
Release : Spooked [Japan Edition]
Year : 1997
Genre : Heavy Metal
File Type : mp3 320

Info:

Pretty Maids have never let me down musically. But I am flabbergasted that they still manage to floor me, 20 years after I first fell in love with their music. I knew I was going to like 'Spooked', as I have every other CD from this band. But that it was gonna blow me away the way it did was a total surprise! After a short intro the band roars into "Freakshow", a heavy metal song so un-1997, it's almost ridiculous! And the following "Dead Or Alive" reminds me very much of the sound the band sported on 'Future World' over 10 years earlier. I know we all hail Hammerfall and Nocturnal Rites as purveyors of real heavy metal, that waved their flags high, and brought metal back in the warmth during the late 90's.

Genre : Heavy Metal
File Type : mp3 320

Info:

The end of a millennium was arriving shortly, and Pretty Maids were still going strong. Almost 20 years after their birth, not much has changed musically for these guys. It's such a pleasure to listen to this band going on and on, without loosing their quality. How many bands do you know that have been around this long, without changing their sound once? Outstanding! Even their line-up seems to have been constant for the last decade. If you haven't heard these guys yet, it's about time! Melodic metal doesn't come much better than this!

Artist : Pretty Maids
Country : Denmark
Release : Carpe Diem [Japan Edition]
Year : 2000
Genre : Heavy Metal
File Type : mp3 320

Info:

'Carpe Diem' is just as good as any of the other releases from Pretty Maids. They keep delivering classic heavy metal, and I'm always stunned by how heavy they really are. Sure, they are a melodic band, with many mid-paced songs and ballads. But the brother part of their material is actually very heavy. Just pop this disc in, and listen to the opening "Violent Tribe" and the fantastic "Until It Dies"! And as always, you're bound to rock along to catchy refrains, like in "Wouldn't Miss You" and "Carpe Diem". 'Carpe Diem' might just be the bands most consistent album to date, and it is a very balanced CD. Ronnie's voice sounds as vital as ever, and Ken keeps hammering out killer stuff with his guitar. It's refreshing to hear a band that is not afraid of guitar-solos, and keeps from tuning down the guitars.

I just keep repeating myself when writing about this band. Consistent line-up, consistent songwriting skills, consistent musicianship etc. This band is just phenomenal! They never let me down. They continue to release stellar material, album after album. Every metalhead owe it to themselves to own a Pretty Maids CD or 2. So why not start with 'Planet Panic'?

Artist : Pretty Maids
Country : Denmark
Release : Motherland [Japan Edition]
Year : 2013
Genre : Heavy Metal
File Type : mp3 320

Info:

If anyone has heard the lead single ‘Mother Of All Lies’ then you’ll know what type of hard rock extravaganza you’re in for. The last Pretty Maids opus, Pandemonium (2010), was a rewarding heavy metal experience, and Motherland follows suit as a clean-cut, well-polished metal album.

Personally, I still prefer the band’s older material, particularly the 1984 opus Red Hot And Heavy, and while their current sound is far removed from those fiery days, the Danes can still pack a punch. The five-piece are masters at melting together crystal clear melodies and Gothic-tinged Euro metal, and the result is a wholesome sound bolstered by the soaring, yet oaken wails of Ronnie Atkins whose soul never seems to age.

Artist : Aldo Nova
Country : Canada
Release : Nova's Dream
Year : 1996
Genre : Hard Rock
File Type : mp3 320

Info:

Aldo Nova is somewhat of a conundrum. To listen to one of his records you instantly know that this man has a gift most musicians can only dream of. However, just when fame nad recognition on a wider scale is up for grabs he disappears from view, content with other people using his work and talents - most notably Celine Dion. Nova's Dream is a very personal introspective work, as was an earlier album Subject. Whislt not aimed at the commercial market, this album demonstrates the influences on Nova's music, and as is assured with this guy there are some great tracks.

This is a great CD. This group kind of sounds like a cross between whitesnake & roxy blue from the 80's. The songs Don't settle for Less, Rock the House, Young Blood (best track), and Dream On really rocks!!

Artist : Pretty Maids
Country : Denmark
Release : Future World
Year : 1987
Genre : Heavy Metal
File Type : mp3 320

Info:

These guys from Denmark definitely came to rock! Although not Pretty Maids' first release, it is their first major label U.S. release, or at least it was when I bought it. This was the type of exciting release that had me waiting for the bands next disc. The best song here is the title track, which even had a great video of a car, the band, and the outback. The guitar work of Ken Hammer has me green with envy. Like many European bands, Pretty Maids has that classical sound to it with astounding keyboards and scorching vocals.

Year : 1984
Genre : Heavy Metal

Info:

People look at the title and the cover and pass up on this record. There is no bigger mistake you can make.
This is a must have record. A diamond from a classic era. From start to finish this is one of the most enjoyable metal records that you will ever hear. Very heavy, yet at the same time bursting at the seams with unforgetable melodies.
Classic Metal is definitely what it is but it's the best kind of Classic Metal. Tight playing, great production, truly memorable tunes.

Artist : Pretty Maids
Country : Denmark
Release : Pretty Maids/In Santa's Claws [Japan Edition]
Year : 1983/1990
Genre : Heavy Metal
File Type : mp3 320

Info:

Danish hard & heavy band the Pretty Maids were formed in 1981 by singer Ronnie Atkins and guitarist Ken Hammer; adding guitarist Pete Collins, bassist John Darrow, and drummer Phil More, the group recorded a demo which earned them a contract with the British label Bullet, resulting in the 1983 release of their self-titled debut EP. That same year, the Pretty Maids supported Black Sabbath on their tour of Scandinavia, and after replacing Collins with guitarist Ricky Hansson and Darrow with bassist Allan Delong, the band entered the studio to record their first LP for new label CBS, 1984's Red, Hot and Heavy. Hansson's tenure proved short-lived, however, and Collins returned to the lineup for a tour lasting through 1985 two years later, the Pretty Maids resurfaced with Future World.

Country : USA
Release : Cutouts
Year : 1992
Genre : Hard Rock
File Type : mp3 192

Info:

From humble beginnings in 1983, the New Orleans-based hard rock act rose above the cream of the bands touring the southern U.S. club circuit. Within three years, the band's live show had built a reputation that could not be denied and was becoming legendary throughout the south. While performing an opening stint with Ratt, Poison and Queensryche, the guys caught the eye of MCA Records and also Marshall Berle (nephew of Milton Berle) who, at the time, was managing rock superstars, Ratt. In August of 1987, guitarist, Steve Blaze and drummer, Danny King of Lillian Axe joined forces with vocalist, Ron Taylor, guitarist, Jon Ster and bassist, Rob Stratton of another popular regional touring band, Stiff. One month later a deal with MCA Records was in the can, and in April of 1988, the band's self-titled debut album (produced by Ratt guitaritst Robbin Crosby) was released. Spawning the MTV and radio hit, "Dream Of A Lifetime", the band hit the touring trail, supporting the likes of KrokusLillian Axe, Stryper and Lita Ford, as well as headlining shows of their own.

Info:

Lillian Axe was a massively underrated melodic metal band from New Orleans. Their self-titled debut LP was released in 1988. Containing ten electrifying compositions, the album showcased a variety of emotions, gathered both in heavy rocking tracks as well as beautiful ballads. Producer Robbin Crosby (ex-guitarist of Ratt) managed to capture the key elements of Lillian Axe's style, which blended into one powerful rock experience. One of the highlights of this record was the opening track "Dream of a Lifetime", released as the band's first single.

Release :     VH1 Classic: Metal Mania Stripped
Year :           2004/2005/2007
Genre :       Hard Rock Heavy Metal
File Type :   mp3 192

Info:

VH1 Classic Metal Mania: Stripped is the first of many upcoming VH1 Classic products. The songs on the CD are acoustic versions of some of the biggest ballads from your favorite hair bands and were gathered from imports, live recordings and hard to find albums. Some of the songs included on the album are Poison's "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" and Queenrysche's "Silent Lucidity" from MTV Unpled, Scorpions "Wind Of Change" from Acoustica Live, a live acoustic version of Tesla's "The Way It Is," a solo performance of "Miles Away" by Kip Winger and an acapella version of "More Ethan Words" from Extreme. There are also six brand new acoustic recordings from artists such as Night Ranger, Cinderella, White Lion and Great White.
VH1 Classic has embraced the oft-slammed hair-metal brigade both with their television programming support and this continuing CD series. STRIPPED VOL. 3 cherry-picks a poppy slab of previously recorded tracks (both live and studio versions) given the unpled treatment. New recordings round out the set, including the pared-down duo of Tommy Shaw and Jack Blades paying homage to their days in Damn Yankees, a solo acoustic performance by Kip Winger, and former Mr. Big vocalist Eric Martin singing his heart out on one the band's requisite torch-song power ballads.

Release : The Big F
Year : 1989
Genre : Hard Rock
File Type : mp3 320

Info:

I don’t think I’ve ever heard an album whose existence is so totally in a vacuum like this disc. Doomed from the time of its release in 1989, it went virtually unnoticed by everyone except music nuts like me who were constantly in search of the perfect jam.
Why was it doomed? Because no one could really write about them. The band got little (if any) press and even the pictures on the inside of the album and CD sleeves are unfocused so as to prevent recognition…all because two of the three members were from the 80′s pop band Berlin (yes, 'Take My Breath Away' Berlin) and that connection would have destroyed their street cred. I remember when the album was released I was working at Paradise Records in Baton Rouge and the record company (Elektra) was very secretive about the band’s origin. Not a very smart strategy, given that hard rock was so visually driven at that time.

Another treasure dug up by Retrospect Records and first time ever on cd for the enigmatic L.A. Sunset-Strip based 80s Hair Metal / Glam act LICKITY SPLIT. Headlining clubs like the Troubadour , the Whiskey , Gazzarri's and The Roxy alongside bands like Guns n Roses , Tuff and LA Guns , LICKITY SPLIT was a band that unfortunately slipped thru the cracks. Now they have been resurrected and this is an excellent slice of 80s Hard Rock. Lickity Split re-united for Rocklahoma 2009 and won over a legion of new fans. Every 80s Glam / Hair Metal fan needs this in their collection.
