Formed in Birmingham in the late 1960s, Black Sabbath would rapidly
ascend to become towering figures of the music they helped to invent:
heavy metal. Blending powerful guitar riffs with a heavy rhythm section
and lyrical themes of the occult, drugs and all things dark, Black
Sabbath broke through in 1970 with their self-titled debut album and its
hit single, "Paranoid". They then rode the crest of the wave of British
metal that rose up in the 1970s, recording one classic track after
another ("War Pigs", "Sweet Leaf", "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath") until lead
singer Ozzy Osbournedeparted for a solo success in 1979. Throughout the
1980s and 1990s,their line-up went through numerous changes, to include
at various points Deep Purple's Ian Gillan and Ronnie James Dio. The
Best Of Black Sabbath is their most comprehensive greatest hits
compilation to date. This 32-track, 2-CD set gathers all of the
best-known songs from early Sabbath's now-classic line-up, while still
finding space for a few live tracks and some later, post-Ozzy recordings
("Heaven And Hell", "Turn Up The Night" and "The Dark/Zero The
Hero").The Best Of Black Sabbath is an essential introduction to some of
the finest works of these rock pioneers.

With its cover image, one would expect to be led into some dark,
abysmal, terrifying journey. Flip to the back cover, and everything is
serene and 'heavenly', yet all the same people are intact and present.
''What's going on here,'' you say? Are these people intrinsically evil
or are they good? Is the hell image truly how things are, and the heaven
is what it's supposed to be like? On the inside cover, which was
gatefold, there was the image of the band (Iommi/Osbourne/Butler/Ward)
guarding a bed, like on the front cover, like spirits, warding off some
bad karma or energy. It was all very weird.

Not only do you get the remastered, very underrated album, but you
also get a second disc that has the recording with the original vocals
laid down by Ray Gillen. Gillen died a few years later from AIDS. That,
along with the fact that the release with his vocals has floated around
in bootleg circles for years now, makes this a heralded release in many
circles. People in the know never thought it would officially see the
light of day.

Many had left Black Sabbath for dead at the dawn of the '80s, and with
good reason -- the band's last few albums were not even close to their
early classics, and original singer Ozzy Osbourne had just split from
the band. But the Sabs had found a worthy replacement in former Elf and
Rainbow singer Ronnie James Dio, and bounced back to issue their finest
album since the early '70s, 1980's Heaven and Hell. The band sounds
reborn and re-energized throughout. Several tracks easily rank among
Sabbath's all-time best, such as the vicious album opener, "Neon
Knights," the moody, mid-paced epic "Children of the Sea," and the title
track, which features one of Tony Iommi 's best guitar riffs. With
Heaven and Hell, Black Sabbath were obviously back in business.
Unfortunately, the Dio-led version of the band would only record one
more studio album before splitting up (although Dio would return briefly
in the early '90s). One of Sabbath's finest records.
